The Conjuring 2 – Sound Replacement (Location Recording)

John and I really wanted to create a sound library of different noises that we could use as foley. I thought it would be a sweet I idea to get a little creative and go out hunting random sounds. Since doing this course I have become a bit of a sound freak and like to see what sounds I can get out of a normal household item. My favorite place to go for sounds is the antique stores because there are some many little weird things that can be used to create foley. I thought this would be a great starting point for John and I. I also wanted to go and check out my local junk store reverse garbage to see if we could find some junk to smash as well. Before we went out we grabbed some location gear and got our plan of foley noises. We hired out a Zoom F8 recorder, a boom, wind cover and a Sennheiser MKH416 shotgun microphone. We went to my favorite store first in

We went to my favorite store first in woollongabba.  As soon as we walk through the door we had a problem straight away. In our excitement we forgot stores play loud music to make customers more comfortable while shopping which made us feel as if we couldn’t get anything done, Every time we found a sound and pressed play the music took over. Even know we knew this was a major problem we didn’t let it stop us. We saw it as a tool to help us plan and prepare, it gave us time to go looking around the stores for sounds we wanted to record. We then went around and recorded everything we needed during the 8-second break between songs. It was quite fun and the music gave us time to check levels and work out we needed.

Here are some pictures of the items.

John and I had a great time just going out and recording random sounds, it was the first time we ever did location recording and it went perfectly. Even know we came across some problems we both acted professional and really planned every single move, to make sure we got the best recordings. This was also the first time John and I have ever tried to put a sound library together.

The next day we went into the C24 studio to clean up our recordings and placing them within our session. We couldn’t believe how clean and clear the audio was and how much use we had with them. While we had the studio we record a broken toy keyboard for the crooked man nursery rhyme which we planned to create using Ableton but this thing was perfect for it. We just grab a Shure SM57 and went crazy. The night before John learned how to play the whole song on this broken toy it was so funny to watch. But yeah we had a get time and really got great recordings too.

Here is a playlist of the interesting sounds we recorded and edited (Audio taken from John Blinco’s sound cloud)
